Along with other European nations, bicycle and e-bike sales in Austria last year were also harmed by serious supply bottlenecks. The demand outstripped supply. Nevertheless, champagne corks popped when the domestic bicycle industry was able to break through the magic €1 billion value sales barrier for the first time in 2021. Despite ongoing delivery problems, last year’s sales value sales rose by a double-digit 17% to €1.03 billion. That was reached with a bicycle and e-bike sales volume that was virtually the same as the previous year’s level. The 490,394 units sold in 2021 represented a slight 1.2% dip compared to 2020. To put this sales value growth into perspective, since 2015, Austria’s bicycle industry value sales have tripled.
A double-digit value growth while sales volume remains steady – how is that possible? Of course, the e-bike. With a higher value and sales continuing to grow to 221,804 units in 2021, e-bikes hold a 45.2% market share of total domestic bicycle and e-bike sales (volume) in their hands. Austria continues to be the strongest e-bike market in the DACH region. In 2021, e-bike sales generated €756,25 million, almost three-quarters of the total 2021 bicycle and e-bike sales.
